The Worlds and Piping Live!

Well, lousy UK internet hookups thwarted all attempts at live posting during the Piping Live! festival and the World Pipe Band Championships. Rest assured, Piping Live! is securing its place with events that should be as much the “must see” as the Worlds itself. This year saw outstanding, most un-Scottish, weather all week long making for great outdoor music at George Square and probably one of the largest-ever crowds on Glasgow Green for the Worlds. The National Piping Centre is the hub of all activity and a great place to meet and experience the current folks and music in Scotland’s exploding traditional music scene (check out a sampling here). It is the place hobnob with local musicians and other pipers. The College of Piping has also gotten with it and offered a host of mid-day lectures and recitals with the likes of Alasdair Dunn and the living piobaireachd legend himself Donald MacPherson.

The Grade 1 final at the Worlds was competitive as usual for the top tier bands. Some excellent drumming coming out of many bands, making it quite the scramble for that Best Drum Corps. prize these days. The RSPBA site has the full tally of results (along with the expected wide spreads in the placings for all to see).

Some pics highlighting the events.
